Dr. Smith Retires




Dr. David L. Smith, ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist, retires December 31, 2017 after 24 years of practice. We are honored to have had Dr. Smith on our team since 1993, and know that he has touched the lives of many patients throughout the years.

Dr. David SmithUpon completing his undergraduate degree at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Dr. Smith attended medical school at Emory University in Atlanta. This was followed by an internship at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, an ophthalmology residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, and a glaucoma fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Dr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He held a variety of positions, including Head of the glaucoma service at Bethesda Naval Hospital from 1988-1993. During that time, he trained ophthalmology residents, conducted clinical research and treated various dignitaries including many members of Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court and President H.W. Bush. He also served as an assistant clinical professor at USUHS, the military medical school, where he taught eye trauma and cataract surgery courses to medical students and ophthalmology residents. Upon retirement from the Navy, he moved to Charlotte in 1993.
