Today there are many choices in facial treatments for a more youthful appearance. Not only should you weigh the several options for types of treatment, but you also need to consider who should perform the procedure. With their specific medical knowledge of the skin, muscle and nerve tissues surrounding the eye, your Ophthalmologist is an excellent choice for facial procedures such as injecting fillers around the ocular area.
As we age, our skin changes. Wrinkles develop as the skin loses elasticity and becomes thinner. Some of the causes include sun exposure, smoking, repeated contraction of facial muscles or poor hydration. Fillers are a nonsurgical method of minimizing deep to moderate wrinkles and depressions in our facial appearance.
Originally developed using bovine (cow) collagen, facial fillers were later produced using human collagen and required prior allergy testing. Today’s fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin used by ophthalmologists for over thirty years in cataract surgery. Fillers, such as Juvederm, Perlane, and Restylane, are injected just beneath the skin to fill lines and depressions that occur with aging. Fillers are especially effective in the lower eyelid, cheek and mouth areas. Pain is minimal, because most modern fillers contain an anesthetic in the injection material. Juvederm, Perlane, and Restylane last from six to eighteen months and are usually supplemented on a yearly basis.
BOTOX is another treatment that reduces the appearance of wrinkles. BOTOX is a purified version of Botulinum toxin A and is used to relax the muscles beneath the wrinkle. It works by preventing muscle contraction and allows the skin above to lay smooth. An application of BOTOX lasts for several months.
